American Cockroaches

Periplaneta americana

Large reddish-brown roaches that come up through drains and from exteriors — the 'palmetto bug' of OC.

Size

1.5 to 2 inches (one of OC's largest insects)

Color

Reddish-brown with pale yellow margin on pronotum

Risk Level

Moderate (contamination; minor asthma)

Active Season

Year-round; peaks warm months

American cockroaches are the large reddish-brown 'palmetto bugs' that come up through drains, out from under exterior debris, and into garages and basements at night. Unlike German cockroaches, they don't primarily breed indoors — they're an exterior and drain-driven pest, which means the treatment strategy is fundamentally different.

Identification

What american cockroaches look like

American cockroach adults are 1.5–2 inches long, reddish-brown, with a pale yellow-edged margin on the shield behind the head and fully developed wings that allow short flights, especially in warm weather. Both sexes are winged. They're one of the largest insects most OC residents will encounter indoors.

Egg cases are dark brown, hard, and about 3/8 inch long — often glued to surfaces near harborage. Nymphs look like smaller wingless versions of adults and progress through many molts over a relatively long development period.

Orange County Habitat

Where you'll find american cockroaches in Orange County homes

American cockroaches thrive in damp, dark, decomposing environments — sewers, storm drains, mulch piles, garage corners, garbage areas, and the spaces under and around exterior plumbing. In Orange County the most common entry route into homes is up through floor drains and from exterior debris around the foundation, especially during hot dry stretches when sewers concentrate them and they push for moisture indoors.

Older OC neighborhoods with aging sewer laterals, mature landscaping, and abundant outdoor harborage see the heaviest pressure. They're a recurring presence in older Orange, Placentia, and Fullerton homes — typically as occasional indoor sightings tied to nights, drains, garages, and basements.

Signs of Infestation

Signs of a american cockroaches infestation

  • 01Large reddish-brown roaches seen in garages, bathrooms, or kitchens at night
  • 02Dark egg cases (capsules ~3/8 inch) glued to surfaces near harborage
  • 03Roaches emerging from floor drains, sink overflows, or exterior debris piles
  • 04Smear marks and fecal spotting along wall-floor edges in damp areas
  • 05Activity spikes during hot dry weather or after sewer disturbance
Risks

Health and property risks

American cockroaches contaminate surfaces they cross, and their cast skins and droppings contribute to indoor allergen load — though to a lesser degree than German cockroaches. They aren't a primary asthma driver in the way Germans are, but they're far from cosmetic in a kitchen or food-prep area.

The realistic concern for most OC homes is intermittent indoor presence tied to drain and exterior conditions, with serious problems mostly limited to commercial sites near sewers or with significant exterior harborage.

When to Call a Pro

When to call a professional

Occasional single American cockroach sightings in a garage or bath, after a hot stretch or a sewer disturbance, are manageable with drain treatment and exterior harborage cleanup. Recurring indoor activity, multiple weekly sightings, or any commercial site sighting is a licensed treatment situation — and unlike German roaches, the program emphasizes drains and exterior conditions over indoor baiting.

How Trident Treats

How Trident treats american cockroaches

Trident treats American cockroaches under California Structural Pest Control Board License #PR8662 by addressing the actual source: drain treatment, exterior harborage reduction (mulch, debris, water sources), and perimeter treatment of foundation access. Indoor work is limited and targeted, because the population isn't living inside.

American Cockroaches FAQs

Common questions about american cockroaches

Almost certainly, if it was reddish-brown, 1.5–2 inches, and seen at night near a drain, garage, or bathroom. They're sometimes called palmetto bugs and are the largest cockroach most OC residents encounter.
Drains connect to sewer systems where American cockroaches harbor. During hot dry weather or after sewer disturbance, they push up through floor drains and sink overflows seeking moisture and shelter.
Less so. They contribute less to indoor allergen load, primarily because they aren't living and reproducing inside in the same way. They still contaminate surfaces and warrant treatment when indoor sightings recur.
Address the entry points: drain caps that fit, periodic enzyme drain treatment, reduction of mulch and debris within several feet of the foundation, exterior light placement that doesn't draw them to doors, and weather-stripping garage thresholds.
Less effectively than on German cockroaches, because Americans don't spend much time indoors where the bait is. Drain and exterior treatment is the more reliable lever.
Yes, short distances, especially in warm weather. It's startling but not common indoors. They're mainly active by walking and running at night.
